Tune-Up
Terms of Use & Privacy Policy — effective August 27, 2026
Terms of Use
The service
Tune-Up ("Tune-Up") is a personal vehicle maintenance tracker for logging service history, tracking when oil changes, tire rotations, and registration renewals are next due, and surfacing open safety recalls for the vehicles you add. By using Tune-Up, you agree to these terms.
Not a substitute for professional inspection or official records
Tune-Up is a convenience tracker, not a mechanic, a legal record, or an official safety authority. Due-date and due-mileage estimates are based on generic service intervals and the mileage and dates you or the app records — they are not tailored to your vehicle's actual condition or manufacturer-specific schedule. Recall information is retrieved from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's (NHTSA) public recalls database by make, model, and year, and may be incomplete, delayed, or not apply to your specific vehicle (which NHTSA identifies precisely by VIN, not just make/model/year). Always confirm your vehicle's actual recall status and service needs with your manufacturer, a dealership, or a qualified mechanic. We are not responsible for a missed service interval, an undiscovered recall, or any consequence of relying on a date, mileage, or recall shown in Tune-Up, whether caused by inaccurate data, a reminder that didn't fire (for example because notifications were disabled, the device was off, or the app was uninstalled), or any other reason.
Subscriptions
Tune-Up's free tier tracks one vehicle. Tune-Up Premium is an auto-renewing subscription (billed monthly or yearly, as shown at purchase) that unlocks unlimited vehicles in the same garage.
- Payment is charged to your Apple ID (or Google Play account) at confirmation of purchase.
- Subscriptions renew automatically unless canceled at least 24 hours before the end of the current period. Your account is charged for renewal within 24 hours prior to the end of the current period, at the price shown at the time of purchase.
- Manage or cancel your subscription anytime in your device's account settings (App Store or Google Play) — Tune-Up's developer cannot cancel it for you.
- If a free trial is offered, any unused portion is forfeited when you purchase a subscription, where applicable.
- Payments are processed entirely by Apple or Google; refunds are handled under their respective standard policies, not by Tune-Up's developer directly.
Acceptable use
Use Tune-Up only for its intended purpose of tracking vehicles you own or maintain. Don't attempt to reverse-engineer, resell, or misuse the app or its use of NHTSA's public lookup services for any purpose unrelated to the app.
"As is," no warranty
Tune-Up is provided "as is," without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including accuracy of VIN-decoded, recall, or service-interval data, fitness for a particular purpose, or uninterrupted availability. To the maximum extent permitted by law, the developer's total liability arising from your use of Tune-Up is limited to the amount you paid for the app or subscription in the 12 months before the claim.
Changes to these terms
If these terms change, this page will be updated with a new effective date, and material changes will be noted in the app's release notes.
Privacy Policy
Information we collect
None, on our own servers. Tune-Up has no backend server of its own. It does not use any analytics, advertising, or crash-reporting SDKs. The only outbound network requests it makes are the vehicle lookups described next.
Vehicle lookups (NHTSA)
When you add a vehicle, Tune-Up sends the VIN you enter to NHTSA's free public vPIC decoding API to identify the make, model, and year, and separately sends that make/model/year to NHTSA's public recalls API to check for open safety recalls. Both are api.nhtsa.gov / vpic.nhtsa.dot.gov endpoints operated by the U.S. government, not by Tune-Up's developer — that request and the vehicle information in it are visible to NHTSA under its own privacy practices, the same as looking up a VIN on NHTSA's own website. Tune-Up does not send your name, location, device identifiers, or any other personal information along with these lookups.
Your data
- Local storage only. Every vehicle you add — nickname, year, make, model, VIN, mileage, service history, and recall status — lives in your device's local, on-device storage, the same way a notes app would store what you type.
- Deleting your data. Uninstalling the app permanently deletes everything on your device. There is no account to delete and no server-side copy, because none exists.
In-app purchases
Tune-Up Premium is processed entirely by Apple or Google through their standard in-app purchase systems. Tune-Up's developer never receives your payment details (card numbers, billing address, etc.) — that's handled directly between you and Apple or Google under their own privacy policies. Tune-Up only learns whether a purchase succeeded, so it can unlock Premium features on your device.
Notifications
Tune-Up can schedule local reminders ahead of a registration renewal or when an open recall is found. These are scheduled and delivered entirely on your device using its own operating system — Tune-Up does not use any remote or push notification service, and no reminder content is sent anywhere.
Children's privacy
Tune-Up does not knowingly collect information from anyone, including children, beyond the vehicle-lookup requests described above, which contain vehicle information only, never personal information about the user.
Changes to this policy
If this policy ever changes this page will be updated with a new effective date, and that change will be described in the app's release notes.
